Legal & General
In July 2009 Shelter and Legal & General started working together to raise awareness among staff and partners of the devastating human impact of housing need, and to raise money to support Shelter’s work with homeless and badly housed people.
Achievements so far
Legal and General is generously helping to fund a Shelter project to help prevent teenage homelessness in Gloucestershire, and part-funds two key staff posts in the South West and North East of England.
They were the headline sponsors for Shelter’s ‘Ground breaking’ report and launch event.
Staff have raised £90,000 so far by taking part in numerous events, including:
Vertical Rush
30 staff braved our award-winning towering running challenge Vertical Rush in February 2010, raising £7,000.
Gary Burchett, Legal & General’s Managing Director of Housing said:
‘Vertical Rush was an excellent event that not only raised much needed funds for Shelter, but also proved to be a superb way of bringing our people together as a team to take on the challenge’.
Eight teams are taking on Vertical Rush again in March 2011!
Hadrian’s Wall Trek
In May 2010, a team of 14 from Legal & General’s housing department took on a 25 mile, two-day trek alongside the remaining sections of Hadrian’s Wall, raising over £18,000.
25 staff are braving the elements of England’s south coast on a Jurassic Walk in 2011.
Midlife Cyclists
Four cyclists set off on a gruelling 800-mile journey to Spain in May 2010. Starting at Santander’s UK headquarters in London, via Legal & General’s head office in Kingswood and finishing 10 days later at Santander’s Spanish headquarters in Santander, they raised £10,000.
A huge thanks to the tenacious team Ben Thompson, Stephen White, John and Sharon Phillips!

Looking forward
In 2011, Legal & General will be supporting Shelter’s work convincing the Government of the economic case for housing.
They have also committed £100,000 over three years to fund our West Sussex Community Legal Advice Service, which provides advice on a huge range of issues – from debt, housing and welfare benefits, to employment, consumer problems and family issues, along with civil legal help through to court representation.
Stephen Smith, Legal & General Network’s Director of Housing and External Affairs said:
‘I am delighted that we are able to support this new initiative with Shelter. The service they provide is invaluable and without it many more people would find themselves without the means to obtain advice - which could ultimately mean they become homeless.
Shelter will do everything they can to make sure this does not happen. We have been working with Shelter for over a year and I am very proud of what we have achieved together.’
