Wates

Wates Living SpaceIn January 2008, Shelter began a two-year charity partnership with affordable housing contractor, Wates Living Space.

Thanks to its success, Shelter’s partnership with Wates Living Space was extended to its other three divisions – construction, interiors and retail, for a further two years in March 2009.

Employee involvement

2009 saw the Wates Group involved in a variety of sporting events including:

  • Shelter’s inaugural Vertical Rush 2009
  • the London Marathon
  • a coast to coast cycle ride
  • an epic South American motorbike trek

A sponsored sleep out, a Boxing Day dip and skydive were also among the fruitful fundraisers which helped the organisation to smash their 40k target by over £30,000!

In September 2009, eight staff also attended a presentation training session to become ambassadors for Shelter’s schools programme, and have volunteered at numerous events.

In June 2010 Wates beat their £100,000 fundraising target. To celebrate this achievement, Wates offices across the UK held a series of fun football-related events to coincide with the World Cup, including:

  • football tournaments
  • World Cup sweepstakes
  • cycling 500 miles on an exercise bike in head office reception!
Wates employees

Campbell Robb, Shelter’s Chief Executive said: ‘This partnership has been a fantastic fit for our two organisations. The initiative and enthusiasm of Wates employees is second to none and is a real testament to the company.

'To smash a fundraising target in a recession is a tremendous achievement and we’re very proud of our relationship with Wates’.

We would like to thank everyone at Wates Group for their involvement in the partnership - and for raising vital funds for Shelter’s work with people in desperate housing need.
