Young people speak out
People under 25 are among those most likely to be affected by the current housing crisis. Shelter's Home and Away project gave young people the chance to record their experiences of bad housing and homelessness.
Housing costs out of reach for young people
Home ownership is way beyond the reach of most people under 25, while private renting is expensive, and usually calls for large sums upfront.
Finding a secure place to live is especially hard for care leavers and young people who have been forced to leave home, because they often lack the emotional and financial support of a family.
In 2008 Shelter joined forces with International Centre for Digital Content (ICDC) and Mediabox for the Home and Away project, giving young people the chance - and the resources - to record their experiences of homelessness on video and mobile phones.

About Shelter's Youth Panel
Shelter’s Youth Panel is made up of young people who are homeless or who have been in care.
For the Home and Away project panel members made links with other young people in housing need across England, to produce a series of vox pops and podcasts.
The films on the pages in this section have been produced by 80 16–21 year olds from Birmingham, Merseyside, County Durham, Cheshire, South Yorkshire, Oxfordshire and Bournemouth.
Home and Away was developed in partnership with the International Centre for Digital Content and funded by the DCSF (Media Box).
