Remember Shelter in your Will

For more than forty years, ever since the film Cathy Come Home, Shelter has been working to give everyone the right to a decent, safe and affordable home.

We have achieved much in that time. But there is a lot more to do. By leaving a gift to Shelter in your Will you can help us to build a better future for people in housing need.

Why I'm leaving a legacy to Shelter...

"I am lucky enough to own a warm, dry, light, cosy house. It is appalling that poor families and those fallen on hard times are unable to find or afford a home - disastrous for children."

Miss R Nutman, Cumbria

"Having been very close to being homeless in the early years of our marriage, with the added problems of a baby, we both appreciate the need for your work."

Mr and Mrs Reeve, Avon

"I have decided to leave something to Shelter in my Will. I have been fortunate and I want to pass on some of my good luck to people who aren’t so fortunate."

Sue Heels, Middlesex

"I’ve been lucky to own my homes for nearly 40 years, but I can still remember the sub-standard housing of my early childhood."

Mr R Whittlesey, Coventry

"The condition of a lot of emergency accommodation is deplorable, and I believe that Shelter is the only organisation that can highlight this."

Mr David Eley, Nottingham

"I have been a supporter since the charity began in the 60s after ‘Cathy Come Home’. I find it iniquitous that there is still homelessness in a rich country like Britain, over 40 years on."

Ms Jill Eckersley, London

The vital work your legacy could fund

Leaving a legacy will cost you nothing today. But it will make a difference to the lives of future generations:

  • National housing advice helpline
Every year Shelter’s helpline gives free, confidential and expert advice to thousands of people in desperate housing need and threatened with homelessness.

  • Housing advice centres
Our national network of housing advice centres offers free information, advice and support. Our advisers let people know their rights, explain their housing options and can help negotiate with councils, landlords and lenders.

  • Housing support projects
Shelter runs a number of projects tailored to individual needs, including projects that help families make the transition from homelessness to a settled home, a tenancy support scheme for older people, and our Children’s Service, which helps homeless children turn their lives around.

  • Campaigning
Shelter campaigns have help push through laws and policies that tackle the root causes of  bad housing. Your legacy could help us pressure the government to find new and better solutions to homelessness and to invest in decent affordable homes.
