Some disputes about your home can’t be dealt with in court, but instead must be dealt with by a tribunal. The tribunal is a special kind of court that only deals with certain types of disagreement. The main housing-related tribunals fall under the same umbrella body - the Residential Property Tribunal Service (RPTS).
Rent assessment committees
If you think the amount of rent you have to pay, or a rent increase, is excessive, you may be able to challenge it by applying to a rent assessment committee. Whether you can do this, and your chances of success, will depend on the type of tenancy you have.
Leasehold valuation tribunals
If you are a leaseholder and are having problems negotiating with your freeholder, a leasehold valuation tribunal (LVT) may be able to help. They can settle most financial disputes and may be able to sort out disagreements about the quality of services provided.
Residential property tribunals
Some decisions made by the council can be appealed by applying to the residential property tribunal.
