How to reclaim housing benefit

If your claim for housing benefit ended less than six months ago, you can sometimes make a rapid reclaim. If not, you'll have to make a complete new claim.

Reclaiming housing benefit after a 6 month break

You have to start your new claim from the beginning and fill in a new claim form if it is more than 6 months since you last claimed housing benefit.

You must tell the council about any important changes in your circumstances.

Rapid reclaim

You can reclaim housing benefit by completing a shorter form if your circumstances are the same as the last time you claimed and you are also reclaiming one of the following benefits:

  • income support within 26 weeks of your previous claim
  • income-based jobseeker's allowance (JSA) within 26 weeks of your previous claim
  • employment and support allowance (ESA) within 12 weeks of your previous claim

Jobcentre Plus should give or send you the rapid reclaim form (HBRR1) but you must return the form to your local council.

Use the Gov.uk council finder to look for your council's website
