Can you help us create an archive?

Items in the Shelter archive

Shelter is building an archive of our work since we started in 1966 (and of the work done while Shelter was being planned). Do you have relevant printed materials, photographs, recordings or a first hand account you could contribute?

We have two clear purposes in doing this.  First, we want to build a record of what we have done and achieved, and pay due respect to the human story behind Shelter.  Second, we want to learn from it, to strengthen what we do in the future.

Although we have a fair amount of material, there are many gaps - inevitable given that Shelter has been in existence for more than 40 years.  We would very much like to fill those gaps, and who better to ask than the people who have come to us for help and the people who have worked for us over the years?

We’d like to hear from you

Have you ever:

  • been helped by Shelter?
  • worked for Shelter in any capacity, paid or voluntary?
  • been a Shelter supporter?
  • been a member of a Shelter Group or a Shelter Set?
  • taken part in campaigns or fundraising events?
If so, you may have tucked away somewhere:
  • old reports,
  • newsletters,
  • leaflets,
  • posters,
  • press releases,
  • film,
  • audio recording,
  • press cuttings,
  • or other materials.

Or you might like to contribute memories, or some other information you think should be included in our archive. If you or a member of your family has been helped by Shelter, we would particularly like to hear your story – anonymously or otherwise.

Please email Les Burrows at les@shelter.org.uk, call him on 0844 515 2021 or write to him at 88 Old Street, London, EC1V 9HU.

Initially the archive will be for Shelter’s internal use, although we hope to exhibit aspects of it over time.

Apart from material which has been already published by Shelter, everything else will be treated in confidence, and proper written permission will be sought from the person providing the information should we wish to make it available beyond Shelter.

Please note that our request for first-hand accounts is different to the call – also on this website - for case studies to illustrate media coverage of Shelter’s current work
