Staff at Birmingham Midshires wear red for the day

Birmingham Midshires has raised £1 million for Shelter’s work with homeless and badly housed people. To celebrate, staff from their head office are visiting the West Midlands Housing Aid Centre today (30 June 2008).

Nigel Stockton, Managing Director of Birmingham Midshires, will present Shelter staff with a cheque for £1 million, and meet some of the advisers working at the centre.

Since 2004, the Wolverhampton-based company has made a donation to Shelter each time it sold certain mortgages to a customer.

The company has also got involved in exciting fundraising activities for Shelter. They organised a series of five-a-side football tournaments and competed in running events around Britain. They even held a day where everyone in the office wore red in aid of Shelter (pictured).

Alan Gosschalk, Shelter's head of fundraising, said; 'Birmingham Midshires is a very important partner and we are grateful for their generous support and commitment to Shelter's work.

'The company is unique in terms of the range of support it provides Shelter. Not only have we had a successful four-year relationship with them but its Chief Executive, Nigel Stockton, has actively engaged with Shelter by taking part in marathons, and staff have organised bespoke sporting events.'

In the West Midlands, 1,550 homeless households are living in temporary accommodation. In Wolverhampton alone, there are 50 homeless households living in temporary accommodation, not to mention 6,000 households on housing waiting lists.
