Help is just a text away

22 July 2008

For the first time, Shelter North East is able to offer advice by text message.

Anyone in need of help can simply send a text to 80010, starting with the word ‘Shelter’, followed by your name and the town you are in. A qualified adviser will call back to discuss how we can help.

Costing no more than a standard text, the new service is for anyone in Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead, Northumberland or North and South Tyneside.

Shelter North East also now provides specialist legal advice on these community care issues:

  • help in obtaining an assessment for care
  • health and accommodation needs
  • ensuring the needs of disabled people and their carers are being met
  • ensuring disabled people and their carers are receiving the help they are entitled to.

This expansion of our services reflects the fact that many people seeking housing advice from Shelter often have related problems with disability or health issues. Often, it can be difficult to resolve one issue without getting help with the other.

Manager of Shelter North East, Tracy Guy, said:

‘We are really excited to be able to offer these new services to homeless and badly housed people in the region.

'Not only are Shelter’s advice workers now just a text away, but we are able to help with a greater range of problems.

'At Shelter, we know many people with housing problems often also need help with other issues and would prefer to be advised by one service. Offering a range of specialist legal help under one roof makes the process much easier. So don’t put off getting advice any longer - make an appointment with Shelter today.’
