MPs pledge support for Shelter

10 July 2008

More than 50 MPs and Peers joined dozens of other guests to mark the launch of Shelter's Now is the Time campaign in the House of Commons on Monday.

The event was hosted by Karen Buck MP, who was joined by Shelter’s Chief Executive Adam Sampson and Junior Housing Minister Iain Wright MP.

The Junior Minister addressed the audience, offering his support for the campaign to tackle unaffordable housing and reaffirming the government's commitment to updating the overcrowding standard.

Parliamentary support for Shelter's campaign is growing rapidly - 79 MPs have already pledged their support to Early Day Motion 1830 on Housing Need.

The EDM calls on the Government to act now to:

  • meet its commitment to build 3 million homes by 2020
  • ensure that enough social rented homes are built for those who need them most
  • protect people facing eviction and repossession or living in bad housing
  • end the housing divide by making the housing system fairer for everyone.
