Taking the marathon by storm

250 heroic Shelter runners braved biting wind, hail and torrential downpours as they completed the 26.2 miles of the Flora London Marathon yesterday, raising almost £450,000.
The rain, although less refreshing for bystanders than it was for the tired runners, did not deter the scores of Shelter supporters. Clad in red Shelter anoraks, they were among the 250,000 fans who lined the route and contributed to a great atmosphere as they spurred runners on with cheers and words of encouragement.
Shelter's first athlete to cross the finishing line was Asmelash Abraha, who completed the marathon in a very impressive 2 hours and 44 minutes. He raised almost £2,000 in the process.
Having completed the gruelling course, runners headed straight to the Shelter tent for refreshments, massages and congratulations.
The merriment continued well into the evening as participants related their experiences of one of the most important and colourful events in England's sporting calendar.
