Rage Against the Machine

After a huge grassroots social networking campaign on Facebook and Twitter, Rage Against the Machine has reached number one for Christmas - raising over £80,000 for Shelter in the process. Congratulations and a massive thank you to everyone involved!

The campaign was initiated by Essex couple Tracy and Jon Morter in response to the X Factor monopoly of the Christmas number one spot. They started a Facebook group and generously asked members to donate to Shelter via a Justgiving page when they downloaded the track.

Kay Boycott, Shelter’s director of Communications, Policy and Campaigns, said: 'Christmas is an extremely important time for Shelter and any money we receive helps some of the most vulnerable people in society.

'With more than 1 million children in overcrowded accommodation, tens of thousands in temporary accommodation and many more facing repossession, our support and advice services are needed more than ever. We are therefore very grateful for these and all donations we receive at this time of year.'

Rage Against the Machine have now said they will also donate a large portion of their royalties from the track to Shelter. Many, many thanks to them, and to all who have donated via the campaign.
