Colourful support from street artists

26 March 2010

Street art

A public exhibition celebrating urban art and graffiti in Brighton on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 May will be raising funds and awareness for Shelter this year.

Founded and organised by urban art agency, Wet Paint Productions, ‘The Beautiful and the Canned’ will feature creative installations and artwork in central city locations including Jubilee Square and walls at nearby sites. A nearby gallery space will also be promoting and selling the artists’ work.

The event, which is part of Brighton Festival Fringe 2010, is free to all and provides a rare insight into how this style of art is created, allowing people to watch the artists at work.

The event will raise awareness and funds via a range of activities:

  • bespoke tee-shirts designed by well-known artists especially for the event, which will be on sale during the weekend and in the Brighton Shelter shop prior to the event, with profits going directly to Shelter.
  • a dedicated Shelter space that will be designed and created by the artists as a live art project, evolving over the weekend.
  • the donation of a percentage of profits from artwork sold during a private viewing on Friday 7 May to Shelter.
  • Shelter information posts across the site, including within 'The Paint Box' – a tailor-made box like installation which forms a blank canvas for the artists on the exterior and a ‘Shelter’ on the inside.
