Government abandons private landlord registration

Government plans to scrap increased regulation of private landlords is disappointing, Shelter has said today.
In response to the announcement today, Kay Boycott, director of policy and campaigns said:
‘Every year Shelter picks up the pieces for thousands of private tenants who seek our help, many more than would be expected considering the size of the private rented sector.
‘The aim of landlord registration was to lift standards in the sector and immediately drive out bad landlords who operate under the radar.’
Ms Boycott added: ‘It is vital that councils make this a priority to drive out amateur and unscrupulous operators, especially as an increasing number of people will be housed for longer in this sector. It is therefore in all of our interests that the private rented sector gets the attention it so desperately needs.’
