Councils must be ‘transparent’

If local councils are given more decision-making powers on housing, they must be transparent and accountable, Shelter warned today.

Responding to the decentralisation and localism bill announced today in the Queen’s Speech, Shelter chief executive Campbell Robb said:

‘It is essential that if local councils are given more power this must be accompanied with clear transparency, so that people struggling to access an affordable home can hold their local authority to account.

‘With house building at its lowest level for decades and 1.8 million households stuck on housing waiting lists, the fundamental measure of any new policy will be how much it meets the desperate need for affordable housing in this country.’
