Housing and immigration seminar
23 September 2008

Shelter, in association with the TUC, is running a policy seminar on housing and immigration in London on Wednesday 15 October. The event is open to housing professionals and the public.
Immigration is a subject that receives a great deal of policy, political and media attention. Questions about who comes, where they come from, and how long they stay for are at the heart of an ongoing debate.
Beyond the discourse on numbers, however, is a much more fundamental question: if immigration is here to stay – and labour market economics, as well as EU rules, say that it is – how do we manage the housing and other support needs of migrants while they are here?
This is without doubt a complex area, and one that requires input from a range of different agencies. Shelter has published a discussion paper that seeks to clarify the current situation as we see it, and suggests options for reform.
This paper will be available to delegates on the day. We are keen to use the seminar as a platform for further constructive debate with relevant partners.
The seminar will take place on Wednesday 15 October from 10am to 1pm at Congress House, Great Russell Street,London WC1B 3LS.
To help us tackle these questions, there will be a panel of speakers including:
- Jon Cruddas MP Dagenham (invited)
- Frances O’Grady, TUC Deputy General Secretary
- Sir John Waite, Co-Chair, Independent Asylum Commission (invited)
- Caroline Davey, Deputy Director of Policy & Research, Shelter
