A route to homelessness? a study of why private sector tenants become homeless

Author: Julie Rugg, University of York
This research examines the underlying reasons why tenancies in the private rented sector end, through interviews with tenants and landlords, and aims to provide some constructive solutions. (April 2008)

Reaching out

A research report covering the findings of Shelter's biggest ever consultation with street homeless people. The report identifies the progress made over the past 10 years (since the creation of the Rough Sleepers Unit), as well as highlighting the outstanding gaps in the safety net. (Dec 2007)

Older people and housing factsheet

This factsheet provides information on housing issues relating to older people.  It looks at the tenure among older people, their housing options including specialist accommodation, housing conditions and social exclusion.  It also provides information on government policies and initiatives that affect older people. Ongoing/future research projects

  • Housing needs and community involvement: Evidence from the Thames Gateway (expected Summer 2008)
  • Children and Bad Housing: Further analysis of the Family and Children Study (ongoing in 2008)
  • Further work is also planned on the private rented sector, housing need and mortgage repossessions.

Research contractors database

While Shelter carries out part of its research in-house, a significant proportion of our research programme is commissioned externally, and we maintain a database of researchers to enable us to draw on a wide range of experience and skills when we put work out to tender.
