Standard letters

These standard letters can be adapted to use when helping young people with housing cases.

Use the letters in conjunction with the information contained in the hot topics and top tips. They are in Rich Text Format (rtf), so can be downloaded and adapted using most word processing software (including Microsoft Word).

The italicised parts will need adapting according to your client's circumstances. You should keep a copy of the letter and, if possible, proof of postage or faxing, on the young person's file.

Homelessness application letter

This letter can be adapted and either given to the client to take to the council, or posted or faxed to the council. If the council does not contact you to confirm receipt, the letter can be followed up with a phone call.

See especially the page on homelessness applications for further information.

Request for a review letter

Remember to ensure that the council receives this letter within 21 days of the young person being notified of the decision. If this is not possible, add details of the reason for the delay; the council will then have to decide whether to exercise its discretion to accept the request for the review. Again, if you do not receive a response from the council (for example, a copy of the young person's file), follow up the letter with a phone call.

See especially the page on homelessness reviews for more information.

Gathering evidence letter

This letter should be sent to agencies when gathering evidence about a young person's situation. Some organisations (for example, GPs) may make a charge for providing letters; it is often worth asking them to waive any charge.

See especially the top tip on gathering evidence for more information.
