National Youth Homelessness Scheme

In March 2007, the government launched its National Youth Homelessness Scheme (NYHS). The aim of the scheme is to prevent and reduce youth homelessness and find ways to end the use of bed and breakfast accommodation for 16 and 17 year olds.

One of the main outcomes of the work is a web-based toolkit. This gives Local Authorities, and others, examples of good practice in a variety of themes, including:

  • early intervention and prevention
  • work in schools
  • supported lodgings
  • supported accommodation
  • floating support
  • moving on.

Shelter's Young Person's Team created the supported lodgings module of the toolkit and put together examples of resources that schemes can use, identified good practice and created case studies on schemes from around the country.
