A very useful resource and one that I am sure will become an essential feature of any land promotion

Andrew Dutton, Strategic Land Director at Persimmon Homes

Shelter's Housing Insights is a really useful tool for councillors, officers and indeed anyone interested in supporting the construction of new homes.  I am certain everyone used the tool will get some good ideas about the sort of messages that can help persuade people to welcome rather than resist development.  In the current political climate, this will become more and more important

Councillor Edward Turner, Oxford City Council

The new Localism agenda means that builders will need to work much more closely with communities to understand their structure and their requirements. Housing Insights is a useful tool that will assist developers communicate with communities in a coherent and understandable way and help ensure the delivery of their housing and development requirements.

Andrew Whitaker, Planning Director at the Home Builders Federation

We all need to understand not only about the benefits that much needed high quality housing can bring to an area but about the real fears that some people may have about its perceived problems. This site, and the tools that it contains, gives us not only that understanding about people’s feelings about new housing but gives practical ways of addressing the fears that some may have.

Kelvin Macdonald MCIH FRTPI FRSA, Senior Visiting Fellow, Dept. of Land Economy, Cambridge and Director of Spatial Effects Ltd

The beauty of Housing Insights is that it works as a platform to test out better questions, like “Where might we live?” Of course Housing Insights starts from clear assumptions, but they are there to be tested, all in the attempt to get better answers. There is urgency to that attempt. By 2033 Britain will be at least 70,000,000 people, and we all have to live together, somewhere.

Ian Abley, co-founder of the 250 New Towns Club

It’s an impressive use of data to drive policy and campaigning, and Shelter deserve credit for recognising that in the new localist world, after the abolition of housing targets and the drive towards community planning, we need a new approach.

Andy Sawford, Chief Executive, Local Government Information Unit (LGiU)
