Domestic Violence and Housing

This course explores housing problems associated with domestic violence. Delegates will develop an understanding of the legal and housing options available to support clients and look at good practice issues including the role of the housing worker, interviewing skills and referral to other agencies.
Course contains
- Definitions and overview of domestic violence
- Short term occupation rights
- Overview of civil remedies under the Family Law Act 1996 (including injunctions and transfers of tenancy)
- Local authority homelessness prevention initiatives to support victims of domestic violence who wish to remain in their homes
- The potential impact of homelessness on clients escaping domestic violence
- Homelessness legislation in domestic violence cases
- Pros and cons of differing housing options.
Learning outcomes
After this course, you will be able to:
- Identify legal options that could improve the safety of victims of domestic violence
- Assess local authority strategies that could improve the safety of victims of domestic violence
- Understand housing rights and options of people made homeless by domestic violence.
Suitable for
Advisers who give housing advice and support to those who have experienced domestic violence. Participants should have a basic working knowledge of housing and homelessness legislation. Previous training in domestic violence awareness would be an advantage.
