Security of Tenure in Social Housing

This course examines tenancy types that commonly arise in social housing which are not covered on our ‘Foundation in Housing Law and Advice’ course.

  • Tenancy Demotion.
  • Family Intervention Tenancies.
  • Localism Act 2011:
    - flexible tenancies
    - fixed term assured shorthold tenancies.
  • Issues under 1998 Human Rights Act.
  • Issues under 2010 Equality Act.

Learning outcomes

After this course, you will be able to:

  • Advise introductory, family intervention, starter and demoted tenants about possession proceedings and defences.
  • Describe the key issues relating to flexible tenancies and fixed term assured shorthold tenancies.
  • Identify potential human rights and equality defences to possession claims
