Challenging homeless decisions for young people
Course available: in-house only (on a date and location of your choice)
Duration: 1 day
This course will assist advisers with day-to-day problems around the homelessness legislation and in seeking reviews of adverse decisions.
Participants will develop an understanding of the complaints procedure that can be used to challenging Children Act, Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 decisions, or inertia.
Course contains
- Issues subject to review
- A review of typical problems and potential remedies
- Context: legislation, the Code of Guidance and case law
- Reviews, timescales and processes
- Data Protection and access to personal files
- An overview of the framework for legal challenge: the principles of administrative law and the importance of process
- Children Act 1989 and Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 complaints procedures
- Practical exercises and worked answers on the above topics.
Suitable for
Advisers working in both the statutory and voluntary sector with young people in housing need.
Participants must at least have attended Introduction to Young People, Housing and Homelessness or preferably the full two-day course Young People, Housing and Homelessness.
Alternatively you must have a good working knowledge of the homelessness legislation and have experience of working with homeless young people.
Knowledge of the Children Act and Children Leaving Care Act would be a benefit.
