Homelessness Provision Beyond Part VII of the Housing Act 1996

This course focuses on the range of potential responses to homelessness that are available beyond mainstream provision.

These options may be particularly appropriate for people who have needs above and beyond those than can be met by the homelessness legislation in tandem with Part VII.

Course contains

  • The primacy of s.20 of the Children Act 1989 in accommodating homeless 16/17 year olds:
    - How should unaccompanied asylum seekers be assisted
    - Help available for homeless families who have been declared intentionally homeless or are excluded by legislation
  • Review of s.21 National Assistance Act 1948:
    - Relevance to the provision of accommodation for those who have a need for ‘care and attention’
  • When accommodation may be provided under s.117 Mental Health Act 1983
  • What housing assistance could be provided under s.2 Local Government Act 2000
  • How have these limitations stood up to judicial scrutiny, particularly within the context of the Human Rights Act.

Suitable for

Practitioners working within housing, homelessness, community care or Supporting People services. Participants will need a working knowledge of homelessness legislation.
