Housing for Older People

This course examines how housing issues affect older people, and how government, voluntary and private sectors can help older people to meet their housing need through advice, benefits, housing support, home care and bricks and mortar solutions. Participants will look at how to support older people to enable them to make positive choices about their housing futures.

  • How to develop a more positive approach
  • How to explore housing options and appropriate advice giving techniques
  • Staying put - sources of help and support to maintain current accommodation
  • Housing support; making adaptations; meeting care needs
  • Benefits, grants and other sources of income, including equity release
  • Moving on - looking at housing options for those who choose to move including social, private sector and sheltered housing; retirement homes and villages; care homes; and practical help with moving
  • Homelessness
  • Causes and prevention of homelessness in older people
  • Resettlement
  • Other sources of help - local and national agencies who may be able to offer help and assistance

Housing support workers (including wardens and scheme managers), housing managers in social housing, housing advisers, social workers and anyone who works with older people.
