Peer Mentoring

This course is targeted at anyone seeking to act as a mentor for peers who may be struggling with similar issues the mentors themselves have experienced and successfully overcome. It explores the meaning of mentoring and the processes and skills involved.

Participants will explore how to begin and end a mentoring relationship and how to deal with issues that may arise in meetings as well as practicalities such as meeting times and places and record keeping.

Course contains

  • Understanding of the process of mentoring
  • What mentoring is and isn't
  • Development of appropriate boundaries between the mentor and mentee
  • Knowledge of interpersonal skills necessary to be an effective mentor including communication, empathy, body language and active listening
  • Conducting a mentoring meeting
  • Giving and receiving feedback
  • Ending the mentoring relationship
  • Record keeping and administration.

Anyone who has expressed interest in becoming a mentor and would like to learn more about the process. Young people seeking to peer mentor those who are dealing with issues the mentor has dealt with and overcome. Also for anyone who is about to begin a mentoring relationship and would like the skills necessary to ensure the process is an effective one.
