This course focuses on identifying some of the common rights and remedies available to people with debts to ensure appropriate referral for specialist debt advice.

Course contains

  • Insolvency procedures: bankruptcy, debt relief orders, administration orders
  • Using complaints processes to assist people in debt
  • Identifying danger signs including old debts and time limits for actions
  • Obtaining necessary information including credit agreements and statements.

Learning outcomes

After this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the essential elements of debt advice and how to work with other agencies
  • Know the key elements of the Limitation Act 1980 in debt work, and refer clients appropriately
  • Recognise the importance of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 in debt work
  • Identify the importance of time limits and procedures to protect debtors in the county court process
  • Examine the key elements of the four insolvency procedures: bankruptcy, debt relief orders, administration orders and individual voluntary arrangements.
