Vertical Rush FAQs
How do I train for Vertical Rush?
Our fitness partner Bannantynes have produced a training video exclusively for tower-running. Please ensure that you have a basic level of fitness before attempting Vertical Rush. If in any doubt, your local gym or GP will be happy to carry out a blood pressure check and advise you.
Do I have to run all the way?
No. This event is open to people of all abilities. If you need to walk it will be possible to do so.
Participants will be set off in waves so the stairwell will never get too crowded. People who are running will easily be able to pass those who are walking.
How long will it take me?
Depending on your fitness level it could take as little as 15 minutes, or it could be much longer than that.
All participants will be chip-timed so you will have an accurate time at the end of the race.
I'm running with a team: do all five team members need to complete the distance?
Yes, you must all complete the whole course. Results are based on the total time taken by all team members.
What happens if I need to pull out before the event?
If you have a health issue or an injury which could prevent you from running, or could make it dangerous for you to take part in the event, please don’t sign up for Vertical Rush.
If you develop an injury or health problem after signing up, please contact us by phone on 0344 515 1190 or email verticalrush@shelter.org.uk to let us know. (Your registration fee is non-refundable.)
What happens if I need to pull out during the event?
If you feel unwell during the event please do not continue. There will be marshals and first aid personnel at designated levels to assist anyone who needs to stop.
The marshal will take you out at the first available floor and back to ground level in the lift. A full briefing will be made on the day of the event to reiterate this process.
Are there drinks stations during the event?
No. There are no drinks stations as it would be dangerous to have liquid in the stairwell. There will be plenty of drinks available after the race but there will be plenty of drinks available for all the runners at our runners reception after the event.
What facilities are there for changing and storage of bags?
Changing facilites are limited and we would ask that you arrive at Tower 42 in your running clothes. However there will be safe bag storage available on site.
How much money do I have to raise?

I want to fundraise online. How do I do this?
Fundraising online is easy and quick and we would definitely recommend it. Try JustGiving or Virgin Money Giving - instructions on how to set up a page are given on the site. Personalise your page as much as possible as this will help your fundraising. You can then:
- add the URL of the page onto your email signature
- if you have a Facebook page you can download a Justgiving ‘widget’
When do I need to raise the money by?
The deadline for sending in all your sponsorship money is four weeks after the event.
How do I send in the money I’ve raised?
All cheques should be made payable to ‘Shelter’ and posted to:
Shelter Running Events Team,
88 Old Street,
London EC1V 9HU.
Please accompany cheques with a note stating your full name and address and that the money is to go towards your Vertical Rush fundraising target.
What happens if I don’t reach the minimum sponsorship amount?
The Shelter events team is here to support you and we’ll help you reach your target. If, however, you do fall short of the minimum sponsorship amount, we ask that you make up the difference yourself.
What sort of support can I expect from Shelter?
Shelter will support you every step of the way. We have provided a training video (in association with Bannatyne’s) to get you started, and will supply regular emails with information about Shelter and about the event, and a t-shirt to wear when training and on race day itself.
