Raise money at school

No child in Britain should be without a home. But more than one million children are living in bad housing: you may know children at your school in this situation.

Shelter is working hard to make sure that everyone has a home where they can feel safe. And to help schools teach children about the problems of bad housing and homelessness we have produced a free classroom kit, packed with learning and fundraising resources.

What is Shelter's classroom kit?

The contents of Shelter's classroom kit

The kit contains:

  • four original lesson plans tailored to the National Curriculum, each with teachers' guidelines, learning objectives, and supporting materials
  • a fundraising handbook
  • a poster and set of stickers
  • teachers' notes on Shelter's work.

Two versions of the kit are available:

  • The primary kit for under-11s encourages younger children to consider what a 'shelter' is and how it becomes a home.
  • The secondary kit for over-11s will help older pupils develop an understanding of how and why people find themselves in housing crises.

"My sisters, my friends and I decided to raise money for homeless people. We organised a date and set up a bric-a-brac stall. Sadly on the day it rained and all the goodies got wet. We were disappointed but we managed to raise an astonishing £49.27 which we were amazed at!"
