What is a restricted contract?

This content applies to England

An explanation of a restricted contract .

A restricted contract can be a tenancy or a licence (see the tenancy or licence section for the distinction between tenancy and licence). The security of tenure is the same for both, and the information in this section applies equally to both. Restricted contract occupiers fall into two categories – those who pay rent which includes payment for services and those with resident landlords.

Restricted contracts are defined in two ways – by a general definition and a specific definition. These are explained in the pages on General legal definition and Lettings by resident landlords.
