New campaign to protect tenants

Tenants packing to move

Shelter has joined forces with Citizens Advice, Crisis, and the Chartered Institute of Housing to lobby the government to change the law so that tenants are better protected from repossession.

Private tenants can face eviction with little or no warning, and through no fault of their own, because their landlord has defaulted on mortgage payments and the lender has taken possession of the property.

All four organisations are calling for a change in the law which would mean courts would have the power to defer the possession to allow the tenant to find other suitable accommodation.

Former Housing Minister and member of the Treasury Select Committee Sally Keeble MP tabled an Early Day Motion in support of the campaign and we have written to MPs urging them to sign it, enclosing a joint briefing that makes the case for change.

The campaign has attracted huge media interest and dozens of MPs have already signed the Motion.
