Shelter and CPRE launch new joint research to shine a light on one way for rural communities to get more of the affordable homes they need to thrive. Our research shows that viability assessments are used to undercut affordable housing requirements in the countryside, reducing the numbers of affordable homes by half when they are used. This report includes our joint recommendations to make viability assessments fair, limited and transparent through reforms to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). Briefing - Estimates Day Debate on Homelessness

Homelessness has risen dramatically since 2010. One of the results of this is to cost local authorities enormous amounts of money, with £1.15 billion being spent on homelessness services in 2015-16. Shelter believes that we need to take steps to address this by ending the freeze on LHA rates, introducing five year tenancies as standard in the private rented sector and dramatically increasing the supply of social housing.
