How to check universal credit payments for a single person

Guide for professionals

Check the universal credit statements

Check your client's universal credit (UC) statements to find out how their UC was calculated for each assessment period.

The universal credit statement

Universal credit is calculated based on monthly assessment periods. When the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) authorises a payment of UC the claimant is sent a statement setting out how much they will be paid for that period. The payments usually occur 7 days after the end of each assessment period, with the statement sent a few days before.

Each UC statement sets out:

  • the total payment a claimant will receive for that monthly assessment period

  • the different elements of UC the claimant is entitled to that make up the award

  • the deductions being made from the award

Where to find the statement

A claimant can sign in to their online journal to:

  • find out information about their claim

  • submit any new information to the DWP and inform them of any change of circumstances

  • request a reconsideration of any UC decision

  • download copies of their past statements

Claimant's can see their statements for the last 6 months from their online account. Claimants can access their account on the sign in to your universal credit account page on the Gov.uk website.

A claimant's online journal is private information, and they should never share their password with you or anyone else.

Ask for your client's permission to look at their online statement on their phone, or get them to print their statements. You might need to ask them to send you screenshots if you are not with them in person.
