In 2012, we launched a five-year strategic partnership with British Gas which aimed to transform homes in Britain for the better, and put housing back on the national agenda. Our partnership proved hugely successful.
Our joint policy and campaigning work secured significant changes to the law, giving new powers to tenants and further professionalising the private rented sector. As a result of our joint campaigning, it is now illegal for landlords to evict tenants simply for asking for necessary and vital repairs to their home, carbon monoxide detectors are now mandatory in all rented accommodation, and landlords are legally required to carry-out 5-yearly electrical safety checks. These changes have the potential to help over 1.5 million households in the private rented sector.
British Gas staff worked tirelessly to raise an incredible £1.3 million for Shelter through a wide variety of initiatives. These included Trek Britain, a series of events nationwide in which British Gas employees walked or ran 10km or cycled 40km or 80km for Shelter. Further to these and countless other events, British Gas staff also supported our Shelter shops through their Wardrobe Relief collection drive, as well as volunteering in store. In fact, British Gas employees volunteered an incredible 6,800 hours to provide invaluable support for Shelter.
British Gas continues to fund our vital national debt advice and fuel poverty service which has helped over 10,000 families across Britain since our five-year partnership began.
Our partnership with British Gas won various awards, including:
- The National fundraising awards Best Business Charity Partnership 2015
- Charity Times Corporate Social Responsibility project of the year 2015
