Take on the world's biggest half marathon with Team Shelter and be part of the fight for home. The Great North Run has become an iconic race, popular with beginners and experienced runners alike.

Starting in central Newcastle, the closed-road route passes over the Tyne Bridge into Gateshead. The final stretch is a welcome downhill incline to the seafront in South Shields.

You'll also enjoy electric crowd support and entertainment. Previous events have even included a Red Arrows flyover!

Sign up for a Shelter charity place and raise funds to defend the right to a safe home.

You must be at least 17 years old to run the Great North Run.

Already have your own place?

If you've already secured a spot, you can use your place to fight the housing emergency by running and fundraising for Shelter. We'd love for you to join the team – please get in touch.

Join us in defending the right to a safe home

When you run a half marathon for Shelter, you're standing with people who face homelessness or unsafe housing. For example, your £349 fundraising pledge could:

  • fund 17 webchats providing essential housing advice

  • fund 12 calls to our emergency helpline

  • pay for legal advice to help two families in crisis keep their home

One of our previous Shelter runners said:

Thanks for a great day #TeamShelter and the amazing cheer squad at eight miles! It was a hot one but a belting day – and that run along the seaside at the end!

Fundraising for Shelter

We recommend you start by setting up a fundraising page on JustGiving and asking friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you. You can also organise an event such as a bake sale or quiz. See our fundraising resources for more inspiration.

Please make sure you’re confident in reaching the fundraising pledge before you sign up. We invest in places at charity events and need to raise as much as possible for our fight against housing injustice.

Our friendly Events team are on hand to support you with your fundraising. If you have a question or want to talk through ideas, email running@shelter.org.uk or call us on 0344 515 1190.
