Getting a place
This content applies to England only.
Housing laws vary between England and Scotland. Get advice relating to Scotland
Preparation
Make sure you're fully prepared by thinking carefully about where you want to live and who you want to live with.
Short-term solutions
If you need a quick housing solution, such as a hostel or refuge, check out our pages on emergency accommodation.
Renting privately or buying
Find out more about renting privately. Remember, you'll usually need a deposit (which landlords must protect using special government-backed schemes) and rent in advance. Buying a place is also costly but there are schemes that can help.
Council housing and other cheaper options
Council housing, housing associations and housing co-ops can be cheap, but in many areas it's hard to get a place.
Supported housing
If you'd like to live somewhere where you can get help and advice, you could try foyers for young people or housing if you have special requirements.
Young people’s advice pages are supported by the Berkeley Group
