Empty homes

Channel 4’s ‘Great British Property Scandal’ is looking at how we can fix up empty and derelict properties and bring them back into use.

Shelter has found that there are 288,000 long term privately owned empty homes in England, a real waste of housing when there are so many homeless families looking for somewhere to live.

However, with demand for homes reaching more than one million over the next five years, and many empty homes being in a different part of the country to where they are most needed, it’s clear that we must build new homes as well.

Use our interactive graphic to find out how many empty council homes, empty private homes and second homes there are compared to housing need in your area.
