Court forms

Almost every step in a court case needs a form, and the forms can be confusing if you are not familiar with them. Court staff can usually help you to find the right form, and will provide forms free of charge for you to complete.

The forms often have explanatory notes on them, or come with separate notes.

The forms you are most likely to use are:

  • claim form (N1) which comes with its own notes N1A and N1C – this is used to start most court cases
  • application form (N244), which is used to make an application (for almost anything) in a case that has already been started.

The Court Service publishes leaflets to cover many aspects of court cases. These leaflets and forms are available from courts. They are also available from the Court Service website but it can be hard to find the right leaflet unless you know what you are looking for, so it may be better to ask at the court.

You should always discuss anything you don't understand with a solicitor, if you have one, or a local advice centre – use our directory to find one.
