A safe home changes everything

Everyone has the right to sleep somewhere safe tonight.

Right now, people across England are being pushed into homelessness by circumstances that can affect anyone- job losses, illness, a relationship breakdown or unexpected bills.

Rising rents and a lack of affordable housing are pushing more people into unstable living situations long before they are rough sleeping.

Shelter helps people find safe, stable housing, empowering them to make informed decisions to defend their housing rights.

We offer expert information and advocacy for those facing housing challenges through:

  • personalised face-to-face advice in our local hubs

  • emergency helpline and webchat services

  • free legal support

'Shelter helped me find a solution,' Chris says.

Chris became homeless at 46 after getting into rent arrears. For six months, he slept in a tent, cycling six miles to work each way to continue his job as a supermarket assistant.

Behind rough sleeping is a bigger housing emergency

Rough sleeping is just the tip of the iceberg. The scale and human impact of the housing emergency are much larger. Around 4,793 people in England are sleeping on the streets on a given night, and over 350,000 people are homeless in temporary accommodation. An unrecorded number of people are sofa surfing, living in hostels or otherwise ‘hidden’ from homelessness statistics.

A fair society protects people when they need it most

Together we can ensure that everyone facing homelessness understands their rights. We can empower more people with the tools, emotional support, and legal knowledge to fight for a safe place to live.

Donate today to help support people find secure housing.

Your donation won't be restricted to a single project but will be used wherever it's needed most to help those fighting for their right to a safe home.
