This half day online workshop provides an overview of how local authorities decide if a homeless applicant is eligible for homelessness assistance.

This workshop is part of Shelter’s Homelessness Inquiries Series. Book three or more workshops in the series for a 10 percent discount.

    What this workshop covers

This workshop will focus on the second test of a homeless application, whether the applicant is eligible for assistance.

When an authority considers whether an applicant is eligible, it must be able to identify whether the applicant is a person who is entitled to housing assistance.

You will explore the legislation and case law that applies to this test, explore practical examples in small groups and put questions to our expert trainers.

    Who this workshop is for

You'll have a good understanding of the homelessness legislation under part 7 of the Housing Act 1996.

You might be a local authority housing officer, homelessness officer, or work in a homeless prevention team.

This event is also suitable for staff and volunteers at voluntary agencies who provide advice and assistance to homeless clients.

    Agenda

This session includes an overview of where eligibility fits in a homeless application and who is eligible for homelessness assistance.

The speakers will lead a deeper dive into the topic including:

    • the effect of settled or pre-settled status

    • who has recourse to public funds

    • the definition of habitual residence

    • relevant case law, legislation and the Code of Guidance

There will be opportunities for discussion with other attendees using scenarios and case studies. You'll be able to ask questions of Shelter's expert trainers as part of the workshop.

Immigration advice is a regulated activity. We will advise where immigration advice would need to be sought. We are unable answer any questions that could be classed as immigration advice.
