This half day online workshop explores the factors a local authority considers when deciding if an applicant is intentionally homeless.

This workshop is part of Shelter’s Homelessness Inquiries Series. Book three or more workshops in the series for a 10 percent discount.

    What this workshop covers

This workshop will focus on deliberate acts or omissions, and causal links in intentional homelessness decisions.

When an authority considers intentional homelessness, it must be able to identify a deliberate act or omission and must always allow the applicant to explain their actions.

You will explore the legislation and case law that applies to this test, explore practical examples in small groups and put questions to our expert trainers.

    Who this workshop is for

You'll have a good understanding of the homelessness legislation under part 7 of the Housing Act 1996.

You might be a local authority housing officer, homelessness officer, or work in a homeless prevention team.

The event is also suitable for staff and volunteers at voluntary agencies who provide advice and assistance to homeless clients.

    Agenda

The session begins with a brief overview of where intentional homelessness fits in a homeless application.

The event will cover how intentional homelessness is only considered during the relief duty stage after a homeless application has been taken.

The speakers will lead a deeper dive into the topic including:

    • definitions of acts, omissions, and causation

    • examples using the homelessness code of guidance

    • case law relating to intentional homelessness

    • when an applicant can be intentionally homeless through acquiescence

There will be opportunities to ask questions of Shelter's expert trainers during the workshop.

    Level: Intermediate

    CPD points: 2.5

    Length: 2.5 hours

    Booking discounts

The 10 percent booking discount is automatically applied to bookings for a delegate to attend three or more workshops in the homelessness inquiries series in the same transaction.

The discount does not apply when three or more individuals attend the same event.
