What this workshop covers
This workshop will focus on the optional additional test of whether the applicant has a local connection.
When an authority considers whether an applicant has a local connection, it must be able to identify whether the conditions are met for a referral to another area.
You'll explore practical examples in small groups and can put questions to our expert trainers.
Who this workshop is for
You'll have a good understanding of the homelessness legislation under part 7 of the Housing Act 1996.
You might be a local authority housing officer, homelessness officer, or work in a homeless prevention team.
This event is also suitable for staff and volunteers at voluntary agencies who provide advice and assistance to homeless clients.
Agenda
The session begins with a brief overview of where local connection fits in a homeless application. The event with cover the definition of local connection with examples.
The speakers will lead a deeper dive into the topic including:
local connection referrals to other areas
challenging local connection decisions
relevant factors to be considered, including fleeing domestic abuse
case law and legislation relating to local connection
examples using the homelessness code of guidance
There will be opportunities for discussion with other attendees using scenarios, prompts, and local connection case studies. You'll be able to ask questions of Shelter's expert trainers as part of the workshop.
