    Join our latest Spotlight event to explore the important relationship between housing and disability.

    What this session covers

    Securing suitable, accessible housing is a significant challenge for many disabled people and understanding the barriers they face – as well as the support available - is crucial to improving outcomes. 

    We will hear from expert speakers who will provide valuable insights into this issue, including: 

    • the role of occupational therapists in housing 

    • the key stressors that contribute to the number of disabled people who experience homelessness 

    • how a human centred approach to collaborative working can support disabled people and their families to access the housing they need

    The role of the Occupational Therapist in re-housing

    With Beth Bradley, Housing OT Manager at Sheffield City Council and Ash Bailey, Housing OT in Adapted Housing and Occupational Therapy at Sheffield City Council.

    This session will cover:

    • what is occupational therapy and how does it fit in housing

    • what is medical priority

    • what happens when a bid is placed and a Housing OT is involved

    • what is a Housing OT Property Check 

    • what happens after someone signs for a property

    Disabled people and homelessness – not just the 39%

    With Rachel E Wilson, Senior Advice and Casework Manager at Mencap.

    This session will cover:

    • the amount of disabled people who become homeless and the causes of this

    • the stressors they face

    • what interventions can be utilised to prevent homelessness

    A human-centred approach to understanding housing needs and barriers for disabled people

    With Ema Thornhill, Senior User Researcher at Scope.

    This session will cover:

    • the housing and support needs of disabled people and their families

    • the challenges disabled people and their families experience when trying to secure accessible housing

    • how taking a human-centred approach to collaborative working can support disabled people and their families to access the housing they need
