Write your will with Will Aid

Will Aid is a charity will-writing scheme.

In November, anyone aged 18 or over can have a simple will written or updated by a solicitor, either in person or remotely. Instead of paying the solicitor's usual fees, you'll be invited to make a voluntary upfront donation to Will Aid.

How to take part

1. Find a solicitor

The list of participating Will Aid solicitors will be published in September 2026. Register your interest to find out when the list goes live.

From September onwards, visit the Will Aid website and enter your postcode to find participating solicitors. Or call Will Aid on 0300 0300 013.

2. Book your appointment

Contact your chosen solicitor directly to book your appointment, mentioning the Will Aid scheme.

Appointments fill up fast, so book early to avoid disappointment.

3. Donate

Once you've booked your appointment, you can make a voluntary upfront donation on the Will Aid website.

Suggested donations

The suggested voluntary donations are

  • £120 for a simple will

  • £200 for mirror wills (a pair of almost identical simple wills)

Donations raised from Will Aid are divided between eight partner charities. The funds Shelter receive help us fight the devastating impact the housing emergency has on people and society.

Partner charities

Shelter is one of the Will Aid partner charities alongside Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, Crisis, NSPCC, SCIAF and Trocaire.

Including a gift in your will to Shelter

If you choose to write your will through Will Aid, we hope you'll consider leaving a gift in your will to Shelter, but there is no obligation to do so. A gift in your will could help us campaign to bring about a historic renewal of social housing so that, in the future, everyone has a place to call home.

Complex wills

If your affairs are complex the solicitor is likely to charge extra to cover this. You would still be entitled to the basic part of your will in exchange for a charity donation. Examples of complex affairs can include:

  • providing for children from previous relationships or stepfamilies

  • setting up a property trust

  • setting up a trust to care for a vulnerable loved one

  • if you need Inheritance Tax advice

  • owning property abroad

  • wanting to make a large number of specific gifts

  • excluding close family members from inheriting
