Letter template: Landlords and agents delaying move in date

Use our template if you need help with costs because your landlord delayed your moving date.

Copy our sample text into an email to your landlord or letting agent.

[Use the subject: Complaint about delayed move in date]

I am writing to you about the delay to my tenancy start date at [address of property].

You contacted me on [date] telling me that the property will not be available for me to move into on [originally agreed move in date] and that this will be delayed until [new proposed move in date].

This has been extremely stressful and inconvenient and has left me out of pocket financially due to money I have spent on [delete as appropriate]:

  • moving costs [£xxx]

  • storage for my furniture and belongings [£xxx]

  • alternative accommodation due to having to move out of my previous home [£xxx]

These costs were caused because you failed to meet the terms of the tenancy agreement I signed on [date]. I would therefore like to request that you pay me compensation of [£xxx] to cover my expenses.

[Include this if you want to ask for help with alternative accommodation:]

I have no accommodation available to me until I can move into the property on [date]. As such, I would be grateful if you could provide me with alternative accommodation to stay in until then.

Please contact me within 24 hours with your response to the above.

[Include the following if you are writing to a letting agent] If I am not satisfied with your response to my complaint, I will ask your letting agent redress scheme to investigate your conduct.
