More than 128,000 children are now homeless in Britain

Posted 14 Dec 2017

Polly Neate, CEO of Shelter said: 'Today’s figures are a tragic reminder of the sheer scale of the homelessness crisis in this country. The fact that more than 128,000 children in Britain will be homeless on Christmas morning is unforgiveable.

'While most of us are looking forward to Christmas at home, many of these families will wake up in a cramped and dingy hostel room. What is worse, a chronic lack of genuinely affordable homes coupled with crippling welfare cuts means they have no idea how long they will be stuck there for.

'No child should have to spend Christmas without a home. Our frontline advisers will continue to work tirelessly, including on Christmas day, to help more families fighting homelessness. But we can’t do this alone. That’s why we’re asking the public to donate to our urgent appeal.'

Notes to editors:

We calculated the number of children who are homeless in temporary accommodation in Great Britain by adding the latest figure for the total number of children in temporary accommodation in Scotland (6,041, Q1 2017 latest available) to the latest figure for the total number of children in temporary accommodation in England (121,360, Q3 2017).

We estimated the number of children in temporary accommodation in Wales (1,533) using the number of families in temporary accommodation in Wales (876), and a multiplier of 1.75 in line with Census 2011 results on family size/numbers of children for Wales. This gives us a final total of 128,934 children in temporary accommodation in England, Scotland and Wales at the end of Q3 2017.
