Shelter response to Queen's Speech
Posted 15 Oct 2019
Polly Neate, chief executive of Shelter, said: “It’s frustrating to see the housing emergency missing from the government’s agenda in the face of the current crisis. With more than 300,000 people homeless and millions fighting for a stable home, this is not something it can ignore.
“11 million renters will be bitterly disappointed if the government fails to keep its promise to end ‘no fault’ evictions. Likewise, it risks a long queue of disgruntled voters if it doesn’t use the upcoming budget to make housing more affordable. That’s why we’re calling for housing benefit to be increased so it covers modest rents and for three million new social homes over the next 20 years.”
