Statement on Grenfell rehousing

Posted 23 Jun 2017

Shelter’s interim chief executive Graeme Brown said:

“Shelter is looking into rumours that people affected by the Grenfell Tower fire are being housed in other parts of the country, although at the moment we have seen no evidence of this. But local and national government leaders have said the families should be rehoused locally and we urge them to make good on this promise, releasing extra funds if necessary.

“Sadly Kensington, like much of London, is severely lacking in accommodation for families living on lower incomes. In the longer term, this can only be solved by providing more affordable housing that ordinary people can actually afford to live in. Meanwhile, our staff on the ground are doing everything they can to provide housing advice and support to those affected by this terrible tragedy.”
