A man of White ethnicity, with brown hair, a moustache and goatee stands in front of a white wall. He is smiling and wearing a black t-shirt with the Shelter Scotland logo on the left-hand side of his chest.

I feel like I’m making an impact. In a small way as I’m only one person, but it’s an impact.

Josh is a digital volunteer in the Glasgow Community Hub. He has been volunteering with us for six months and usually volunteers in the office once a week. He has been made to feel very welcome and enjoys the working environment.

As a volunteer with Shelter, Josh helps to manage and update the website as well as a variety of administrative tasks.

He became aware of our work through his mum, who works for us. Since joining the team at the Glasgow Community Hub, Josh has developed his communication and technical skills and gained more work experience. He has also gained a greater understanding of the housing emergency.

I’ve learned a lot and it has been interesting.

While he hasn’t had any lived experience of homelessness or unfit housing himself, Josh appreciates the importance of our work with people facing homelessness. The number of people living in temporary accommodation and the huge demand for housing was a surprise to him when he started volunteering.

As well as learning about housing issues, gaining experience of working with others in a team has been extremely beneficial to Josh during his time as a volunteer.

It has developed my skills working with other people as a team. As a quiet person, it has helped me quite a lot.

Josh would recommend volunteering with Shelter to anyone interested in helping to tackle the housing emergency while gaining skills and experience.
