The most common options are:
Student halls of residence - lots of students live in halls owned by their uni or a private company in the first year
Private rented student house shares - a popular option after your first year
Your university or student union can advise on other options if you do not want to share. For example, if you have children or you're a mature student.

You get at least 4 months' notice if your landlord wants you to leave in the summer.

Private renting laws changed on 1 May 2026.
If you signed your tenancy agreement before this date it might not explain your rights properly.
Most renters now have assured tenancies.
But you probably have a different type of tenancy if you live in halls of residence.
